This study intends to explore the main problems and the direction of prospectiveresearch in conceptualizing ‘the human as an educational subject'. Over the past decade,
the discourse upon ‘self-help', ‘lifelong learning' and ‘competence' has been greatly expanded.
However, the distinctive characteristics of educational subject have hardly been identified in
the midst of the confusion between ‘education' and ‘the strategic move for exchange value
or monetary advantage'. It is emphasized that the nature of education is definitely different
from that of any endeavor with instrumental interest. In addition to that, the issue of the
limit and possibility of personal autonomy entailed in educational intent and enthusiasm is
examined on the basis of Michel Foucault's perspective on power and ‘self-care'. With the
analysis of the critical issues involved in conceptualization of ‘human as an educational subject',
this study underscores that we should inquire into the unique structure and intrinsic value of
education as a form of life distinguished from schooling or human resource development,
and suggests some unique characteristics of educational experience such as ‘holistic engagement',
‘enjoyment', ‘existential enhancement', and ‘continuous renewal'.
