ABSTRACT

한국어 초록

해방 이후 우리 교육의 가장 큰 문제의 하나는 대도시 및 수도권지역 학교에서의 과밀학급과 과대학교의 문제라고 할 수 있다. 우리 사회의 산업화와 경제발전의 과정에서 대도시로의 인구이동, 특히 수도권지역의 인구 밀집으로 인하여 대도시지역에서는 과밀학급, 과대학교의 문제가, 그리고 농어촌지역에서는 소규모학교와 학교 통폐합 문제가 사회 문제로 대두되고 있는 실정이다. 최근 정부는 과밀학급 해소를 위하여 막대한 예산을 투입하여 학급을 증설하고 학급당 학생 수를 최대 35명 선으로 줄이는 노력에 착수했지만, 이로 인해 학급을 증설하다보니 대도시 학교의 단위 규모는 점점 커지고 있는 실정이다.본 논문에서는 학교규모와 학업성취의 관계에 관해 미국에서 이루어진 선행 연구와 실증적인 조사 사례를 분석하였다. 여러 연구결과들은 소규모학교가 되면 학생들의 기초 학력 증진에 특히 유리하며, 특히 저소득층 학생들에게 그 효과가 크게 나타나는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 미국의 경우 적정 학교규모는 대체로 초등학교는 300-400명, 중학교는 300-600명, 그리고 고등학교는 400-800명 선으로 제안되었다.본 연구에서는 미국의 선행 연구 사례와 우리 나라의 대도시 현실을 고려하여 학교규모를 이상적 학교규모, 적정 학교규모, 최대 학교규모의 개념으로 제안하였으며, 적정 학교규모로는 학급당 35명을 기준으로 하여 한 학년 당 초등학교 3-4학급, 중학교 7-9학급, 그리고 고등학교 8-10학급을 제안하였으며, 최대 학교규모로는 초등학교는 한 학년 당 6학급, 중학교는 10학급, 그리고 고등학교는 13학급을 제시하였다.

영어 초록

It seems to be part of human nature that we are perennially tempted by the prospect of a single and powerful answer to our problems. So it is not surprising that current interest in smaller classrooms and schools has led many people including some educators to hope that smallness has the power to improve the quality of schooling.
Since the beginning of modern education system, we have been trying to expand the educational opportunities for more people in sacrificing the quality of education. As a result, big classrooms and large schools in urban areas have become the hottest problem and issue in our education. Some of the researches have tried to find optimum class size for better education, but rare about school size yet.
According to the available research conducted in USA on school size and its relationship to student achievement, the large majority of studies indicates that smaller is better. There are some inconsistencies with respect to high school size and achievement, but studies of school size in general have demonstrated that smaller schools are associated with higher achievement and higher rates of participation in extracurricular activities.
An analyses of state-level data from North Carolina appear to provide partial confirmation of these findings, but the association between school size and student outcomes that were found are not large. But an academic study conducted by V.E.Lee and J.B.Smith suggests that the most effective size for a high school is 600-900 students in a school. Students in smaller schools than 600 or considerably larger schools over 2,100 tend to learn less. Large schools were found to impact low socio-economic status students more negatively than other groups.
Taken together, the prior researches on school size appear to show, despite the existence of some contrary findings in the literature, that smaller schools are better than larger schools with respect to students achievement. Considering our current situations, this research suggests three concepts on school size: ideal size, optimum size, maximum size, and 18-24 classrooms(630-840 students) in a school for elementary schools, 21-27 classrooms(735-945 students) for junior high schools, and 24-30 classrooms(840-1050 students) for senior high schools as optimum size.
