TThe purpose of this study was to examine the resocialization process of female marriageimmigrants in urban communities by adopting a qualitative research method. The subjects in this
study were seven female immigrants who resided in and around Seoul. Some were from Vietnam,
Mongolia, Uzbekistan and China, and the others were Korean- Chinese and the descendants of
Goryeo. Their resocialization consisted of four stages. They felt anxious and left out in the first
stage, and the second stage was marked by confusion and conflicts. In the third stage, they got to
be in a better relationship with people around them, and became more receptive to surrounding
environments. In the final stage, they tried to improve their lives and made a preparation to lead a
better life in the future. Those who were better educated, who had a better Korean proficiency and
who were more supported from their families were more successful in resocialization. And the
similarities between their mother countries and Korean society had a positive impact on their
resocialization. Unlike rural immigrants, the urban immigrants didn't live with their mothers-in-law
who could mediate between them and neighbors, and they didn't meet the relatives of their husbands
frequently. Therefore there wasn't solid human infrastructure by which they could learn about Korean
culture and social system.
