This study analyzes the descriptions of the Ch?son period found in the history textbooks of East Asian countries <China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong). First, the descriptions of the Chas?n period contained in the his tory textbooks from these three countries can be said co reflect a dear Sinocentric worldview. For example, they focus heavily on China's conveyance of its institutions, writing system, scholarly works, and religions to Chosen, thereby implying that Chas?n was greatly influenced by China. While it is true that Korea was long influenced by China, many of the items whim were conveyed to Korea were not accepted as is, but rather transformed into something uniquely Korean. Although history textbooks recognize the fact that mutual exchanges rook place between Korea and China and that some cultural and academic fields were reintroduced from the former to the latter, they also claim that a great amount of the culture imported from China, including Confucianism, was accepted as is, and continues to permeate throughout Korean society today.Second, in the political field, the history textbooks from these three countries tend to focus solely on Yi S?nggye's founding of Chos?n while omitting the situation that prevailed during the transfer from the Ming to the Qing dynasties. They also use the term pungdang (political factions) in their descriptions of the period marked by the hun'gu (meritorious elite) and sarim(forest of scholars Neo-Confucian literati). However, the term pungdang can in reality only be applied to the period that began with the reign of King S?njo. The members of this early sarim faction are described as having been the descendents of aristocrats who studied in s?w?n (private academies); however, there appears here to be some confusion with the members of the sarim that emerged during the period offactionalism-based politics. There is also a need to amend the descriptions of Hans?ng and P’ y?ngyang as the two biggest cities in Ch?son to Hans?ng and Kaes?ng, The private land system is also erroneously described as having been a national one. Moreover, Chos?n is inaccurately described as having been a vassal of China,
Third, as far as the Hideyoshi Invasions (imjin waeran) are concerned. all three countries' history textbooks tend to perceive the background to the war in a similar manner and to highlight the activities of Admiral Yi Sunsin and the righteous armies (?iby?ng). Nevertheless, the majority of these entries focus on the role played by General Deng Zilong, who was killed in battle while fighting alongside Yi Sunsin.
Fourth, all of these countries emphasize the role played by Chinese characters, scholarly works, religions, and moveable type in conveying civilization and culture to Korea. They also emphasize the face that the conveyance and acceptance of Confucian scriptures in Korea made it possible for a great number of people to study in Tang, and paved the way for the acceptance of China's education and civil service examination (kwag?) systems. However, these textbooks also contain the outlandish claims that Korean students continue to attend hyanggyo (county public school) and s?w?n (private academies) to learn about Confucianism, and that Confucianism remains the basic value structure of today's younger generations. On the other hand, they correctly argue that the development of the hang?l system, tile establishment of copper type printing, and the introduction of the <Tong?i pogam (Exemplar of Korean Medicine)> prove that cultural conveyance was not a one-sided affair.
As such, the descriptions of the Chos?n period found in these three countries history textbooks are based on a Sinocentric worldview. Viewed from a historical standpoint there can be no denying that a great deal of China's culture was conveyed to Chos?n, Moreover, many of these textbooks also make ample reference to Chos?n's influence on China. Nevertheless, the continued presence of erroneous descriptions and misperceptions renders it necessary to bring about modifications to these textbooks.
