This study aims to examine how early childhood pre-service teachers perceive imagesof mathematics. For this study, 58 early childhood pre-service teachers drew a picture
and explained their first and present images of mathematics through their own drawings.
Because this study aimed to identify pre-service teachers’ implicit perception of the image,
various drawing techniques (e. g., free drawings, prose, and speech bubble) and
expressive methods (e.g., realistic, metaphorical and comparative) were adopted. The
collected data were analyzed using contents analysis. Specific results of each part are
as follows. First, The previous images of mathematics pre-service educators perceived
were described as a person who is very stuffy and old-fashioned. Other images were a
classroom hour which was very boring and scary when they were in middle school or
high school, and mathematics as a dizzy and difficult subject. Second, The primary
influences on early childhood pre-service teachers’ previous images of mathematics were
described as repeated achievements and frustrations, positive or negative memory of their
math teachers, and their personal experience failing in exam despite their efforts. Third,
The present images of mathematics that pre-service teachers perceived were described
as their strong endeavor and willingness to study mathematics. There were images of
their desire to apply what they learned from lecture to a near future. Images of their
perceptions about mathematical concepts (counting and calculating, geometry, patterns,
measurement, and data analysis) and discovery of mathematics in everyday life were
identified. This study can provide directions for educating early childhood pre-service
teachers both relieving their mathematics anxiety and improving their mathematics
efficacy.
