2) RCE(Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development,
Ecotourism and ESD(Education for Sustainable Development) in EIU have similar backgrounds in terms of their origins and progresses. In the tourism field, environmental destruction wasprofound with the introduction of mass tourism in the 1970s. Thus, ecotourism has evolved as an alternative form. As in EIU, ecotourism emphasizes educational perspectives, preservation of indigenous culture and residents’participation all while preserving the ecological systems.
This study examines the characteristics of ecotourism and ecotourists in order to find potential applications of ecotourism to EIU. EIU can take the advantages of current practices of ecotourism and an ecotourist’s motivation in education. As a conclusion, five recommendations are suggested: 1) Use ecotourism resources as a place of EIU; 2) Develop and manage ecotourism through RCE(Regional Centre of Expertise on the Education for Sustainable Development); 3) Provide training in EIU to local guides who introduce their areas to tourists; 4) Develop programs to promote experiential learning in EIU; 5) Provide education for cultural understanding and preservation in EIU, focusing on indigenous cultures.
