한국어 초록

본 연구는 사회과의 궁극적 목적인 바람직한 시민성을 육성하기 위하여 학생들에게 어떤 교육
내용을 가르칠 것인가와 어떤 순서에 따라 가르쳐야 하는가에 관한 문제, 즉 사회과의 범위와 계
열에 관한 효율적인 방안을 모색하는 데 있다. 우리나라에　사회과가 도입된 지 반세기가 지났는
데도 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 체계적인 연구가 미흡하다. 반면 미국에서 사회과의 범위와 계
열을 다룬 연구는 19세기 후반부터 서서히 논의되기 시작하여 1990년대까지 활발하게 연구되고
있다.
본 연구는 미국에서 이루어진 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 연구를 크게 두 시기로 나누어 살
펴보았다. 하나는 1921년에 설립된 NCSS를 중심으로 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 본격적인 연구
가 시작된 1979년을 기준으로 한 초기의 연구(2차 세계대전 이후부터 1978년까지)와 또 하나는
NCSS 중심의 본격적인 연구(1979년부터 현재까지)로 나누어서 살펴보았다.
두 시기에 미국에서 이루어진 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 연구들을 통하여 우리나라 사회과
교육과정 연구에 시사하는 바는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 연구와 논의가 활성화 되어야 하며 이는 사회과 전문가 집
단과 연구기관에서 이루어져야 한다.
둘째, 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 구체적이고 상세한 지침이 필요하다.
셋째, 사회과의 범위와 계열에 관한 연구도 기본적으로 사회과가 사회인식을 형성하는 통합 교
과라는 점에 유념해서 이루어져야 한다.
넷째, 초등학교 사회과 교육과정의 계열을 구성하는 중요한 원리로 작용하고 있는 환경확대원
칙에 대한 수정 및 보완이 필요하다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this study is to seek for efficient measures related to the problems that
what contents we have to teach to students in what sequence to cultivate proper
citizenship that is the final objective in social studies, that is, related to the scope and
sequence of social studies.
Although it is already one half century that social studies were introduced in our
country, there is few systemic studies conducted on the scope and sequence of social
studies. In contrast, in case of the USA, it was started to discuss on the studies on the
scope and sequence of social studies from the second half of 19th Century and the
studies had actively been conducted until 1990's.
In this study, the studies on the scope and sequence of social studies conducted in the
USA were reviewed dividing into two eras.
The one group is initial studies conducted near to 1979 when regular studies on the
scope and sequence of social studies were started focused on NCSS established in 1921
(from the Second World War to 1978); and the other was the regular studies conducted
by NCSS (from 1979 to current time).
The points indicated in the studies on the scope and sequence of social studies, which
were conducted in the USA, were as follows:
Firstly, continuous and systematic studies on the scope and sequence of social studies
should be conducted by the professional groups and institutions of social studies; based
on this, discussion on the studies on the scope and category of social studies should
actively be done.
Secondly, concrete and detailed guidelines on the scope and sequence of social studies
are needed: for example, in terms of functions, they should be classified into the one for
minimum or no performance, the one for some performance, the one for major
performance, and the one for intense performance, as well as suggestion by grade.
Thirdly, studies on the scope and sequence of social studies should also be conducted
in consideration that social studies are basically the integrated curriculum that forms the
social cognition.
Fourthly, it is required to make corrections in and to supplement environment
expansion principle that has played an important principle in constitution of education
process of social studies in primary schools until now.
