The story mainly depicts the slow progression into insanity of a woman, the narrator who is suffering from depression in a deeply dramatic sense through various representations of literal dictions, tone, and imagery. The story begins with the event that the narrator and her husband move to the small summer house; which symbolizes “the patriarchal prison-house” (Lancer), for her recovery from mental illness and depression, but her mental condition gets worse by obsessed the wallpaper in her nursery room and the oppression by John, the narrator’s physician husband, does not listen to her and force to her to do nothing but resting. John’s a good-intentioned but nonetheless overbearing husband character represents men’s traditional institution and also reflects the social condition of male dominance over women lives in the 19th century (Cutter 113).
