A spiritual leader of India, Gandhi followed a way of life completely unfamiliar to young Americans. Even some of his fellow Indians had trouble understanding his beliefs and actions, yet he changed the lives of millions of people in his own nation and in others.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in the town of Porbandar on the southwest coast of Gujarat. The young Mohandas Gandhi grew up in a family with a long tradition of service to the rulers of Kathiawar and in ‘an atmosphere steeped in local politics’. Although born into a community traditionally identified with trade(but also with helping to finance the region’s princes), his grandfather, uncle and father all served as diwans(chief ministers and advisers) to local states. Apart from brief encounters with European school inspectors and a few other officials, Gandhi was not exposed in his early life to a substantial British administrative presence and in his youth British rule must have seemed very distant.
