When I saw the title ‘A Clean, Well-Lighted Place’ of this short story at first before reading in earnest, I could consider rough stream and atmosphere of the story to be positive and hopeful in opposition to the prior story ‘Araby.’ However, I have realized that my guess was wrong, and general sentiment seemed desolate and spiritless further than my anticipation. In addition, the feeling of movement was less even though an author’s primary description techniques was almost a dialogic style because in the story, there were few characters who are an old man and two waiters; one is young and the other is old.
All through reading the short story, I have thought all characters were extremely deplorable. When I read the story for the first time, I could not bear a young waiter’s impolite attitudes toward an old deaf man; especially, the worst shocking part was “You should have killed yourself last week.” At the moment, I looked for an unexpected reversal for a little while; for example, the old man was originally not a deaf, so he grabbed the younger waiter by the throat, giving him a harsh lesson. Of course, the plot was contrary to my expectations completely.
