The book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (TLTW&TW), has been criticized of containing the idea of sexism. Considering the time period that the book is written, it is a natural phenomenon. It was 1950s when the book is written and at that time women’s rights were neglected and their status was low. Many books which were written in this time period contain sexism and that proves how the society was at that time. The author, C.S. Lewis was highly influenced by the male-centered society and the book is reflecting it also as a result. Therefore, it is true that C.S. Lewis depicted women in a negative way in TLTW&TW.
Women’s status is low compared to the status of men in the book. Comparing Peter and Edmund to Susan and Lucy, there are differences between their positions. For example, the story of “Cair Paravel” reflects the discrimination against women. There is a part that Mr. Beaver telling children the old rhyme: “When Adam’s flesh and Adam’s bone sits at Cair Paravel in throne….
