1. 니트로 방향족 화합물전 세계적으로 니트로방향족 화합물 (nitroaromatic compound)은 폭약, 살충제, 제초제, 그리고 염료 등의 원료로 이용되고 있다. 이러한 니트로 방향족 화합물은 생산 및 수송 과정 중에 환경으로 유출되어 주변 토양과 지하수를 오염시키며, 대부분의 니트로 방향족 화합물은 환경에서 분해되지 않고 오래 잔존한다. 이중 군사적 목적으로 널리 사용되는 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT)는 1,2차 세계 대전 당시 매우 많은 양이 자연 환경으로 유출되었고 군수 설비가 생산, 사용되는 지역의 토양 및 지하수를 오염시키며 이것 역시 생분해가 매우 느려 수년간 토양에 잔류할 수 있다 (Comfort et al., 1995; Honeycutt et al,. 1996). 이러한 TNT는 화학적으로 방향족 고리에 세 개의 니트로기 (nitro group)가 대칭적으로 위치하기 때문에 구조적으로 매우 안정한 특징이 있으며 (Esteve-Nune et al,. 2001), 니트로기에 의해서 벤젠고리 주면의 전자 밀도가 감소되는 특징 때문에 전자친화적인 산화효소 (electrophilic oxygenase)들의 작용이 저해되어 호기적 산화가 잘 일어나지 않는다 (Vorbeck et al,. 1994). 또한 TNT는 미생물을 비롯해 여러 동물에게 독성을 나타내고 돌연변이 유발 물질로 작용하며, 동물 실험을 통해 사람에게 발암물질로 작용할 수 있음이 확인되었다 (Honeycutt et al,. 1996). 따라서 오염 환경으로부터 TNT는 반드시 제거되어야 하며 현재 이에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다.
TNT를 제거하는 방법에는 흡착이나 소각, 화학적으로 산화와 환원을 유도하는 방법 등의 물리 화학적인 방법이 있는데 이것을 사용하는 경우 효율적인 제거는 가능하나 많은 비용이 들게 된다는 단점이 있다. 이와 달리 미생물을 이용하여 퇴비화를 유도하거나 활성 슬러지 공정을 이용하는 등의 생물학적인 방법을 사용하는 경우 비록 TNT에 의한 독성 때문에 미생물이 저해를 받을 수 있다는 단점이 있으나 (Johnson et al., 2001) 비용이 싸고 환경에 해를 미치지 않는다는 장점이 있다. 따라서 TNT 분해능이 높은 분해 미생물을 오염 환경의 정화에 이용하는 것은 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다.
