본 연구는 만다라(Mandala)를 활용하여 유아 미술 교육 프로그램을 구성하고자 만다라가 지닌 문화적, 종교적, 정신적 가치에 대한 기본적 인식에서 출발하였다. 이에 본 연구에서 설정한 연구 문제는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 선행 연구를 통해 탐색한 자료를 기초로 도출해 낼 수 있는 만다라의 유아 미술 교육적 가치는 무엇인가?
둘째, 교육 현장 관계자들은 만다라의 유아 미술교육 적용에 대해 어떠한 인식과 요구도를 가지고 있는가?
셋째, 만다라를 적용한 통합적인 유아 미술교육 프로그램은 어떻게 구성될 수 있으며, 유아교육 현장에서 실제 프로그램을 적용한 사례는 어떻게 제시될 수 있는가?
이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구에서는 관련 자료의 탐색, 만다라 경험자 및 유아교사 100명을 대상으로 한 기초 요구도 조사, 그리고 이를 토대로 한 구체적 만다라 활용 유아 미술교육 프로그램 및 실제 활동의 과정을 거쳤다.
이에 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 만다라의 유아 미술 교육적 가치는 크게 5가지로 도출할 수 있는 바, 1) 만다라의 구상적 표현을 통한 오감 교육과 실물 교육, 2) 소우주인 인간이 대우주와 교감하는 정신 세계의 표방 효과로서 인류의 원형과 무의식적 세계를 의식적으로 표현, 3) 문화와 역사에 대한 다양한 고찰을 통한 창의성 고양, 4) 전통 예술에 대한 관심 고취, 5) 미술과 타 교육 영역과의 연계를 통한 통합 프로그램 운영 등이 여기에 포함되었다.

영어 초록

This study was to examine the value of "Mandala", Buddhist Tantric Diagrams, as an art education program for early childhood. This was based on the basic recognition that Mandala has cultural, religious and mental values.
For this purpose, the study presented the following questions:
First, what is the value of Mandala as an art education program for early childhood?
Second, what do teachers relate to education think about the idea of applying Mandala to
children's art education?
Third, what contents are included in an art education program based on Mandala? And, how can the program be applied in the field education?
To this end, the study examined documents related to Mandala and surveyed 100 preschool teachers and people who experienced in Mandala on the idea of applying Mandala to children's art education. Based on this research, an art education program was designed
and applied to children's activities.
The findings of this study were as follows:
First, the study found that Mandala has roughly five educational values as a children's art program: 1) Based on its concrete expression, children can learn about the five senses and things; 2) It shows the archetype of the mankind and unconscious world in a conscious manner; 3) Its various views in culture and history lay the foundation for anti-bias education; 4) It improves children's creativity by inspiring their interest in traditional art; 5) Its inclusive features can connect art with other educational sectors.
Second, the 100 people surveyed showed a very positive attitude to the idea of designing
an art education program for preschoolers based on Mandala and they also highly demanded
such a program as education materials. Through these results, a basic direction was made
to design a specific art program which would connect Mandala with existing childhood education programs and other sectors.
Third, based on the demand for the program by preschool teachers, an annual education
plan for the program and detailed sub-programs were made. The sub-programs included
children's activity using Mandala's art patterns. Following the program, children's activity
products were also presented.
