The purpose of this study is to construct meanings of the modern idea of childhood in the Western society. The modern idea of childhood means that children are different from older children and adults, because children think and function differently from them. The idea of childhood emerged within the contexts of the invention of printing press and the development of universal education. Where literacy was valued highly and persistently, there were schools and where there were schools, the concept of childhood developed rapidly. The first idea of childhood was that children were separated from adults' world, because they should be taught at school. Thus children were considered different from adults. In the 16th and 17th century, the development of universal education resulted in the acknowledgement of children's learning characteristics, which were considered children's nature. An idea of special nature of childhood - a concept of biological growth or development - was added. In the 18th century, the modern idea of childhood as a separate stage, was nourished and spread by Locke and Rousseau's educational ideas. In this period, the characteristics of childhood were modified with Rousseau's claims about children's perfect nature.
In the 19th century, the idea of childhood was distinguished by early childhood and later childhood in the context of the development of early schooling. The idea of early childhood emerged with the establishment of early schooling. In conclusion, the modern idea of childhood was a social construct.
