What are the most important health indicators in Canada?
Health indicators are important to let us know what kinds of health services are needed and to know whether present services are effective. What indicators determine health? Death could be one of the indicators to define the health status in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the number one leading because of death is heart disease . More males get heart disease than females but women are at risk for heart disease and heart attacks, just the same as men are.
The biggest factors that contribute to heart disease are: smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history and age. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. More than half of heart attacks occurring in men and women under 50 are related to smoking. Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of disease and death in Canada. Smoking results in more deaths each year in Canada than AIDS, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, homicide, suicide, motor vehicle crashes, and fires—combined.
