These four works, Gary Pak’s Language of the Geckos and Other Stories, Minsoo Kang’s Of Tales and Enigmas, Paul Yoon’s Once the Shore, and Don Lee’s Yellow, are short story collections of Korean American who are the ethnic minority of America. This essay will discuss how these works cover similar topics but are respectively distinctive. The discussion will be developing with comparisons of structural part and contents part of four works. The structural parts are about place and narrative of the works. Meanwhile, the discussion of the contents part will show how the works cover themes about ethnicity, history, gender and sexuality. At the end of the essay, the inter-relativity of this notions will be discussed.
The main body of this essay begins with the structural part of four works. The first discussion about structure is places of four works. Gary Pak’s Language of the Geckos and Other Stories tells fragmentary episodes in the same place, Hawaii. The significance of the place is not insignificant. The historical contexts of the place affect overall stories of this collection.
