본문내용
In an essay by T. S. Eliot on Andrew Marvell, T. S. Eliot wrote of Marvell`s style as "a tough reasonableness beneath the slight lyric grace.” This expression means Andrew Marvell combines dialectic and metaphysical conceits with balanced form and elegant style. This combination is compared to combination with John Donne and Ben Johnson. As metaphysical poetry in 17th Century, thus, his works are noted for their witty metaphors and epigram format.
Andrew Marvell`s "On a Drop of Dew" shows several characteristics described above. In the poem, he compares the human soul with a drop of dew which is concerned with one of the metaphysical themes, the nature of the human soul. Lines 1-18 describe a drop of dew, shedding from the morning, shining, trembling in its pureness, and yet longing for skies where it is from, and thus evaporating toward the sun.
