* Adjectives
1) Adjectival use of -ing and -ed participles
- S + be + emotive verb -ing : source (who or what causes it)
- S + be + emotive verb -en : experiencer (who or what is affected by it)
2) Marked vs. Unmarked Adjectives
- markedness : any exceptions from what is very typical, very predictable
- the unmarked form is used in a degree question that doesn`t assume anything
- the unmarked adjectives are used more frequently in a given language, learned earlier by children, and used in neutral contexts
3) Adjective Complementation by a to-infinitive clause
- Bob is splendid to wait.
☞ the subject of the main clause is also the subject of the infinitive clause
☞ can always have a direct object in the infinitive clause if its verb is transitive
☞ has an analogue in a construction involving extraposition
☞ evaluative of human behavior
☞ careful, careless, crazy, foolish, mad, nice, silly, wise, wrong, etc.
- Bob is slow to react.
☞ the subject of the main clause is also the subject of the infinitive clause
☞ can always have a direct object in the infinitive clause if its verb is transitive
☞ the sentence corresponds to one in which the adjective becomes an adverb, while the infinitive becomes the finite verb
☞ quick, prompt, etc.
