If the airplane is cruising at constant velocity, the control volume also moves with constant velocity. One way to handle this problem is to add a uniform velocity equal and opposite to the airplane velocity at every point in the field, which brings the airplane, and hence the control volume, to rest. This method is equivalent to attaching a coordinate system to the control volume (airplane). In such a coordinate system, the control volume is fixed, so the methods of the last section can be employed. The forces acting on the material in the control volume are unaffected by this transformation. This approach is called a “Galilean transformation”.
