1 Studies on the Concept of “Death” in the Field of Social Linguistics
Since death is considered to be the most terrible event to most human beings. As a consequence, it is a forbidden area in almost every culture. However, death is not only an inevitable physiological phenomenon but also an irresistible social phenomenon and people must face it no matter whether they like it or not. To avoid mentioning directly the word “death” which will probably arouse unhappy feelings and frighten people, lots of “death euphemisms” are created to substitute for it. There is a large number of “death euphemisms” both in English and Chinese. They serve many socially useful purpose in communication, social development, etc.. Thus, numerous researches have been conducted to give particular and systematic explanations on this kind of euphemism. Such as, Zhang Yanyan’s (2009) “ The Comparative Study on Euphemism of “Death” between English and Chinese” in Journal of Educational Institute of Jilin Province, Li Jiayi & Luo Weiming’s (2006) “On the Types of ‘Death’ Euphemism and the Cultural Psychology of Its Evolvement” published in Journal of Hangzhou Teachers College (Social Sciences Edition),
