Diasporic Elements of Anil in Anil’s Ghost,
and Michael Ondaatje’s Vision for Modern Diaspora Studies
Abstract
This paper looks at Michael Ondaatje’s depiction of the postcolonial diaspora in his novel Anil’s Ghost. The essay primarily examines several of the positive and negative elements of the diasporic experience, as seen through the character of Anil. By observing Anil’s journey to discover her new identity as a Sri Lankan immigrant, the essay will also discuss what the modern diaspora means to Ondaatje. In Anil’s Ghost, Anil and her experiences in Sri Lanka, England, America, and back to Sri Lanka represent the diasporic experiences of all immigrants, refugees, and global citizens of today. This paper uses Anil’s Ghost as its primary source, but also cites various secondary sources, including Michael Ondaatje’s interviews with the media, as well as scholarly articles in modern diaspora studies. These sources serve to give evidence of the diasporic elements in Anil’s story, and also to support Ondaatje’s ideas and visions about today’s diaspora, as revealed in the novel.
