“Poetry is music of great and sensitive souls” (F. M. A. Voltaire, 1694-1778). Poets speak of their spirit through poetry. It is their music of soul as Voltaire quoted. It can speak of happiness, joy, sadness, anger, loneliness, disappointment, and etc... In addition to these, Death can be one of the subjects that poets treat often. But the way how death is expressed in the poetry can be different from each poet. It can be either the death that the poet dreams for his perfection, and it can be the death that the poet pursues as a tool to escape from reality. In “Drinking Alone Beneath the Moon” and “Richard Cory”, Ipo and Edwin Arlington Robison both articulate the death. However, while Ipo implies his death as the way to pursue the perfection of his life by drinking with Moon, Edwin talks of Richard Cory’s death as the death of a man who has no more light to pursue in his life but to choose death, by “put a bullet throguh his head” (ln.16), to escape from the depressed reality. Through imagery, tone, and rhyme of these two poetries, the way how death is treated by respective poets can be well seen.
