Global warming, nuclear warfare, AIDS, and the information super highway. We must look towards finding a basic common connection to help us navigate our future together. I believe those basic building blocks are cooperation, community and commitment.
I was taught to read at the age of two. Placed in advanced classrooms where we, my classmates and I, were told we were the future leaders of society. My friends in the “regular” classrooms were not encouraged. I noted this disparity.
I have continued to be a mentor and tutor after becoming one in elementary school. I have worked with students ranging from the daycare to the university, in the humanities, arts, math and science. It was not that I was such an advanced student. All I did was to explain what I knew so that the individual to whom I was speaking could understand it. I believed then and believe now that there is genius inside of each human life waiting for discovery of a passion for life and learning.
