Benjamin은 기계적 에너지를 이용해 고상반응을 유도하는 Mechanochemical 공정을 통해 금속과 금속 고용체의 nanocrystalline powder를 합성하였으며, 이러한 mechanical activation에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. Mechanical activation은 결정크기의 조절, 구조의 합성, 결함의 생성, 결정상의 비정질화, 상전이, 비정질상의 결정화, 화학반응 등의 다양한 현상들을 수반하며, 매우 복잡하고 빠르게 진행됨으로 인해 정확한 기구는 설명이 되지 않고 있다. 다만 수 nano 또는 수 micro 초의 시간에 충돌, 충격 등에 의해 높은 활성화 상태로 된 입자들간의 접점에서의 반응, 국부적인 온도 상승에 따른 고상반응, 경계면에서의 핵생성 및 결정 성장 등의 몇몇 제안들이 조심스럽게 타진되고 있을 뿐이다.
본 보고서에서는 이러한 Mechanical activation을 통한 Pb-계 perovskite 화합물과 고용체들의 합성과 소결특성, 전기적 특성에 대해 살펴보고, mechanical activation이 thermal activation과 어떻게 다른가에 대해서 고찰해 보고자 한다.
