1. 도입건강한 생활 방식의 일부로 운동을 사용하는 것은 고대로부터 기원하는 오래된 것이지만, 현대 물리치료는 19세기에 유럽에서 마사지 및 수동 근육 요법의 촉진과 함께 시작되었다. 20세기 초에는 소아마비 환자를 대상으로 근육 기능을 평가하기 위해 사용되었다. 물리치료사는 사용 가능한 근육을 강화하기 위한 프로그램을 개발했으며 소아마비 환자가 기능적인 움직임을 위해 남아있는 근육 조직을 사용하는 방법을 배우도록 도왔다. 비슷한 시기에 제1차 세계 대전에서 돌아온 군인을 대상으로도 재활이 시작되었다. 전쟁에서 부상당한 환자는 팔다리가 절단되거나 머리나 척수 부상을 입은 환자였다. 21세기 물리치료는 운동물리치료, 통증물리치료, 수중물리치료, 도수물리치료, 로봇물리치료, 심장물리치료, 스포츠물리치료, 호흡물리치료, 디지털물리치료 등 대상 질환과 치료의 수단이 다양해지면서 치료의 목적별로 세분화되고 전문화되어 가고 있다. 운동치료는 가장 오래된 역사 속에서 가장 많은 발전이 있었고, 앞으로도 새로운 변화를 만들어 갈 것이다. 운동치료의 이론과 실기는 정형물리치료, 신경계 물리치료로 발전되었지만 움직임을 정상화시키기 위한 다양한 치료 분야에 적용되고 있다. 인류의 미래는 과거의 역사를 발판으로 발전한다. 운동치료의 역사를 살펴보는 것은 물리치료의 새로운 변화와 발전을 위해 필요하다. 현대적인 관점의 운동치료는 움직임 향상을 위해 근력강화, 지구력과 유연성, 안정성, 이완, 협응 능력, 균형 능력 등을 향상시켜 기능적인 숙련도를 회복하고 완성할 뿐만 아니라 기능 이상을 예방하는 것까지 포함한다. 고전적 개념은 해부학적 지식을 비탕으로 관절 형태에 맞추어 움직임을 결정하였다. 그래서 움직임을 관절의 모양과 운동 축에 따라 굴곡과 신전, 외전과 내전, 외회전과 내회전으로 구분하였다. 생역학적으로 하나의 관절에서 하나의 근육군으로 일어나는 움직임을 축과 면으로 구분하여 설명한 것이다(Bae, 2001).
