purpose
1) To understand the thermodynamics of a heat engine.
2) To understand the expression of thermodynamic work.
3) Check whether the air obeys the ideal gas law.
In this experiment, students test how a real heat engine following a four-step expansion/compression cycle can do useful mechanical work to lift a small weight. Also test whether this mechanical work is equivalent to PV work.
theory
A heat engine is a device that does work by extracting thermal energy from a hot reservoir and exhausting thermal energy to a cold reservoir.
According to the first law of thermodynamics, the total energy of a system and surroundings does not change, and the energy change of a system can be expressed by the amount of heat () and work () exchanged between the system and the surroundings.
