2. DiscussionData Interpretation
In the graph of Figure 1, there is a moment when the temperature of the solution continues to decrease and then increases at the certain point. It can be understood that this is due to latent heat generated by the phase change of the solution, and it can be confirmed once again by the fact that the temperature near the local minimum point of the graph is similar to the freezing point of the solution.
Errors in the experiment
According to the equation (1), the product of the freezing point depression constant and the molality of the solution should be proportional to the freezing point depression. In this perspective, since solution A has a lower molar concentration than solution B, the degree of freezing point depression of A must be lower than that of B. However, according to Table 2, it deviates from the aforementioned tendency. It can be understood that the error has occurred in this part.
The factors that cause the error
- When measuring the volume of a solution with measuring cylinder, errors may occur because the volume is estimated by a glance.
- In addition, errors may occur as a small amount of solution may remain in the cylinder during the process of transferring the solution from the cylinder to the test tube.
- There is a possibility that errors may occur in the process of measuring the freezing point temperature in the part where the solution should be visually confirmed to freeze. More specifically, the solution should be stirred with a steel stirrer to prevent supercoiling, but if this part is omitted or not properly performed during the experiment, it may not be confirmed that the solution freezes even if the temperature of the solution drops below the freezing point.
