이런 현상을 일으킨 반도체 부족의 원인은 다양하다. 그러나 많은 이유 중 가장 큰 영향은 COVID-19와 수요 예측 실패에서 비롯된다고 할 수 있다.비대면 문화로 실내 생활이 길어지면서 PC와 서버용 반도체 수요가 증가했다. 이에 따른 판매 급감은 2020년 2월 중국을 시작으로 4월 미국과 유럽까지 자동차 업계에 큰 손실을 입혔다 (Hensley et al., 2021). 이에 따라 자동차업계는 같은 부품을 사용하는 IT업계에 칩 공급을 내주었다 (Arcadeep, n.d). 하지만 코로나 사태로 인하여 한동안 판매가 부진했던 것도 잠시, 전문가들의 예상외로 자동차 수요는 다시 늘기 시작하였고 이를 대비하지 못한 업계는 반도체를 구하지 못하는 어려움을 겪었다 (Priddle, 2021).
