Personal Response
Scene 1
The story takes place at a quiet and small town. Blanche comes along looking for her sister, Stella. Stella and Blanche talk about the loss of Belle Reve, which supposedly was their property. Blanche goes on to say that Stella was the one who left them when Blanche was struggling to get things right. After making Stella burst into tears, Blanche meets Stanley.
Blanche is a snobbish and self-centered character. It appears to be belittling when she asks Stella if there are only two rooms in the house. Blanche, although she drank secretly and with Stella, claims to Stanley that she doesn’t drink. She seems self-centered in that Stella once said that “you never did give me a chance to say much, Blanche. So I just got in the habit of being quiet around you.” (p.20) The things that she say are full of blame towards Stella for supposedly leaving. How she was at first depicted as out of place seems of significance.
