본문내용
Michigan cherry farms are having a hard time turning a profit after international competition has caused prices for dried tart cherries to drop.
Michigan growers supply roughly 75 percent of the nation’s total domestic tart cherries, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, but cherries from countries like Turkey benefit from government subsidies and sell at a price per pound so low that it’s difficult for local farmers to compete.
House Resolution 143 urges the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce to protect U.S. cherry farmers by supporting an industry petition to put tariffs on the imported Turkish cherries.
Rep. Jack O’Malley, R-Lake Ann, introduced the resolution on Wednesday, Sept. 4 to throw the state’s support behind a petition before the U.S. International Trade Commission to protect Michigan’s domestic cherry industry. He referred to it as a threat “that can’t be defeated by hard work and sweat.”
