a) What combination of recombinant and non-recombinant alleles will be
produced in the gametes? (2 marks)
RECOMBINANTS: Ab, aB
NON RECOMBINANTS: AB, ab
Most answered this correctly, but many did not specify the type of gametes,
which was required for full marks.
b) If these gametes are fertilized by gametes from a double hemizygous
recessive male fly, what fraction of the progeny will be showing both recessive traits? A and B are the dominant alleles. (1 mark)
¼ of the progeny will show ab Since ¼ of the gametes in a) are ab, the fraction of diploids formed after fertilization with male ab/ gametes will also be 1/4
2) Briefly explain what type of chromatid exchange during meiosis can contribute to genetic diversity. (2 marks)
Crossovers between non-sister chromatids, as these are likely to carry different alleles and therefore produce new combinations in the gametes. Crossovers between sister chromatids do not result in new combinations as they are identical replicas of each other.
