When I learned about catalysts in chemical kinetics chapter in class, I was fascinated by the fact that catalysts are used in various areas such as catalytic converter in a car and iron catalyst in the Haber process. In class, I learned that hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) decomposition can be sped up by the use of catalysts. Catalysts provide a different energy pathway with a lower activation energy for a hydrogen peroxide molecule to decompose to water and oxygen gas. For instance, in our body, H2O2(aq) is produced in white blood cell to protect our bodies from bacteria, and its decomposition is catalyzed by a catalyst called catalase.
2H2O2(aq)→ 2H2O(l) + O2(g) (Catalase functions as catalyst)
The reaction above made me wonder whether other catalysts besides catalase can be used to speed up the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The initial investigation that I planned to conduct was the effect of different transition metals on the rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition.
