The accepted value of the acceleration due to gravity (g) lies within the error range of the measured average acceleration due to gravity.
The 3rd and 5th measurements of the acceleration due to gravity are relatively higher and lower, respectively, to the rest of the data. These variances may have been caused by different factors. Among the factors that may have affected the data is the fact that when dropping the picket fences, the picket fences may have fallen slightly crooked. This would cause the gaps between the black lines to be measured as less than the true value, resulting in a higher velocity and possibly a higher acceleration. This lab’s precision could be increased by assuring that the picket fences fall properly, which could be done through a more reliable method than simply being dropped via hands (such as the use of machines).
Although air resistance is assumed to be negligible in this experiment, if it were large enough to affect the data, it would have caused the measured acceleration due to gravity to be less than 9.80 m/s2.
