1. Why did the first social networking site fail? Is there anything they could have done to survive?
SixDegrees.com 은 6단계 분리이론을 적용해 사용자들을 연결시켜주어 흥미를 이끌었다. 사용자들이 프로필을 만들고 그들의 친구들을 SixDegrees에 초대해 가입시키는 방식을 통해 삼백만의 사용자를 끌어들였다. 그러나 Sixdegrees는 사용자들이 서로 초대하고 친구신청을 받아들이는 것 이외에 할만한 것이 없었다.
SixDegrees는 소비자 욕구를 파악하지 못한 것으로 보인다. 6단계 분리이론을 통해 사용자를 초대하고 친구신청하는 방식과 프로필 생성하는 것은 좋았다. 그러나 사람은 무한한 욕구가 있다. 매슬로의 5단계 욕구계층이론은 인간의 욕구를 1)생리적 욕구 2)안전의 욕구 3)소속감과 애정 욕구 4)인정과 존경을 받고자 하는 욕구 5)자아 실현의 욕구 의 다섯가지로 분류한다.
