Ⅰ. Simple/Compound Pendulum Experiment
1. Purpose of experiment
In the real world, things are not that simple as what we learn from textbook. We learnt much about a simple pendulum in school, but most pendulums that we are using are compound pendulums. A compound pendulum is not easy to calculate and predict, so there will be a hard time to produce some machines using pendulums. In this case, if compound pendulums can be calculated like simple pendulum, it will be helpful. Moreover, thinking a compound pendulum as a simple pendulum means that thinking a complicated system as a simple system. It is a easy way to interpret a complicated system. In this experiment, a simple and a compound pendulum are compared, and relation between them would be found.
2. Experimental equipment
A rotary encoder is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft or axle to an analog or digital code.
An acceleration sensor is a device that measures proper acceleration.
