본문내용
1. IntroductionI remember the day when my aunt’s family immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. At that time, my aunt, her husband, and their three children made their English name before leaving Seoul. For example, my aunt’s husband (uncle)’ English name was Robert or Bob. He gave us a story about why he named himself as Bob. He said, “When I go to America, I have to work so hard like to make a living for my family more than ever. I have to feed them. That’s why I named my name ‘Bob’.” At his words, we all laughed since we have a word in Korean which is pronounced to be [bɒb], meaning “a meal”. Behind the laughter, however, I could feel my uncle’s hard burden on leaving his homeland though I was very young. Since then, I could rarely see them and they came to assimilate to the U.S. culture; one of my cousins forgot many of the Korean words and thus, hardly communicates with us in Korean.
It was the exact description of what I felt in my mind when I come across the word, ‘immigration’ – total assimilation to the target culture.
