In the article “Doing Unto Others” by Ezzat Fattah and “What If Violent Types Are Born, Not Made” by David Ankney, the writers examine what causes criminal’ violent behaviours. Both writers have different views of criminals. Fattah claims criminals’ violent behaviours are the regret of their environment whereas Ankney suggests criminals are born biologically predisposed to crime.
First of all, Fattah believes victimization leads victims to become criminals. Because offenders have been physically or sexually abused in their childhood, violence became an integral part of their “daily visual experiences.” In fact, research shows that “criminals are more frequently victimized than non criminals” and “victims of violent crime have considerable criminal involvement themselves.” Also, violent crime is usually retaliatory in nature, and from the criminal’s point of view, the crime is often morally justifiable.
