본문내용
Chang-rae Lee’s novel A Gesture Life is a story of Franklin Hata who crosses multiple internal borders of identity by going back and forth between his current life as an American citizen and his past memory of being a Japanese medical officer. Hata is known as a gentle friendly Japanese immigrant to his neighbors in Bedley Run, a city near New York. He begins the story by saying he has been living as an ideal model minority and his neighbors call him Doc Hata. However, he is originally born in poor Korean family then adopted by a wealthy Japanese parents name Kurohata. He participates in World War Two as a Japanese soldier and moves to America after the war ends. Throughout the novel he has flashbacks of participating in the Pacific War. Lee’s A Gesture Life illustrates the development of identity through the experience of crossing several borders of identity, ethnics, and himself.
