본문내용
It is not an exaggerated expression to say Richard Sheridan’s reputation heavily lies on The School for Scandal. Richard Sheridan wrote many plays in his lifetime but The School for Scandal was the most successful one in particular. It had its’ first performance on May 8, 1777. Even though it appeared at the end of the London Theatre season, it managed to run for 20 performances with the last play on June 7, 1777. Then it reappeared in the following season, 1777-78 season, for the additional 65 performances. It had total of 261 performances at Drury Lane theatre alone by the end of 1799-1800 season. The number of performances shows how successful the play was at the time since it was rare for plays to perform as many times as Richard Sheridan’s The School for Scandal and only few plays ran more than 15 performances in that period.
