Herman Melville seems to have made a good start as a writer. His first novel "Typee" and his second work "Omoo" gave him overnight fame as a writer. His novels gave readers totally different impression from the conventional works and filled their longings for the exotic adventure. His subsequent works, however, didn't meet the readers' yearning for ventures into the unknown and with the frequent usage of metaphor and symbolism uneasy to decipher, he started to lose the readers' interest. Furthermore, since he wasn't good at gaining decent jobs outside of writing, he went through financial hardships all his life. These failures in life as a writer and his financial suffering pushed Herman Melville out of the normal social frame and allowed him to observe the thinking of people in the conventional social structure. Especially in his works, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "Benito Cereno", which were written early in his life and drew little public attention, his observation of people's prejudice and biased perspective are carefully and delicately explicated.
