1. What is grammar?
√ Grammar is generally thought to be a set of rules secifying the correct ordering of words at the sentence level.
√ Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics "a description of the structure of a language and the way in which units such as words and phrases are combine to produce sentences in the language."
√ Grammar distinguish prescriptive grammars and descriptive grammars
① Prescriptive grammars : To lay down the law, saying what is right and what is wrong.
② Descriptive grammars : To set out to describe the way that people actually use language.
2. Background to the teaching of grammar
√ The primary aim of teaching was to ensure that learners mastered the grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the language.
√ the dominant methodology at the time was audiolingualism, which, in fact, is still influential today.
√ The principles underlying audiolingualism were derived from structural linguistics and behaviorist psychology.
