Korean Modern Society Compared with ‘1984’ by George Orwell and ‘Utopia’ by Thomas More
Satire is regarded as a mirror that by which we can see the dark side of our society. By
reading Korean satirical novels, Korean readers get surprised at how the satirical factors in the
novels are quite similar to the factors in their own life and begin to take notice of their society. To
add, the more interesting thing is that, by reading most of the satirical novels that are written by
foreign writers from different periods, Koreans might also find the satirical factors in the novels
resemble their own society and can have sympathy with them. Through this, we can say that
satirical literature handle the commonalities that human share and pursue, which are such things
as love or freedom. When these rights seem to be deprived in the satirical literature, we get to
sympathize as human and think about what our own society is like. For example, ‘Utopia’ written by
