They are sharing Chinese characters but have different script systems. So there are similarities and differences as well. They have used Chinese characters on different system and histories long time.

i. Similarities

Before Japanese transformed Chinese character, they had used Chinese characters to write their language. Korean had used Chinese character to write before inventing Korean script.

1. Based on Chinese characters (漢字)

Chinese character is only existing script among ancient scripts in ancient writing system. Chinese are using simplified Chinese character(汉字; Hànzì), Japanese are using Japanese Chinese character(漢字; かんじ) with transformed Chinese characters kana; 仮名).
