Chapter 1
As "The Great Gatsby" opens, Nick Carraway, the story’s narrator, remembers his past and the lessons his family taught him. The reader learns of his education, and his moral views, as he begins to tell about Jay Gatsby. The story begins when Nick moves from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, seeking to become a “well rounded” man and to recapture some of the excitement and adventure he experienced as a soldier in WW1. As a bond salesman, he rents a small house next door to a mansion which belongs to Gatsby.
Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom, live in East Egg, a wealthy community across the sound from West Egg. Nick goes to visit his cousin Daisy, a socialite, and Tom, a powerful man. While there he meets Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and girlhood friend of Daisy’s. As the foursome lounge around the Buchanan Estate, Tom receives a phone call, and Jordan informs Nick it is his mistress. Tom, who is known for being unfaithful, doesn't even try to cover the call up. As Tom and Daisy try to set up Nick and Jordan, they question him about a supposed engagement to a girl back home. Nick reassures there is no marriage, merely a series of rumors.
