지석묘는‘거석문화(巨石文化)’의 한 종류로서 우리나라에서는 청동기시대를 대표하는 묘제 중 하나이 다. 지석묘의 가장 큰 특징은 분묘축조에‘거석(巨石)’을 채택한 것으로, 분묘의 외형적 형태와 외·내부구 조, 축조방식 등이 신석기시대와는 전혀 다른 모습이다. 이는 지석묘가 단순히 시신만을 매장하는 구조물이 아니라 분묘자체가 하나의 상징적 의미를 가진 기념물이 되는 것이다. 즉, 분묘의 기능이 ‘단순매장’에서 ‘상징적 기념물’로 확대되는 것이다. 또한 그에 따른 축조과정이나 장송의례 과정도 ‘가족단위’에서 ‘취락단위’의 중요한 행사(축제)로 확대된다. 이러한 분묘양상의 변화는 청동기시대의 중기부터 본격적으로 나타나며 그 배경은 크게 농경발달로 인한 생계경제의 변화와 대규모취락의 등장, 취락간 네트워크형성, 계층화의 진전 등 사회구조적 변화가 중요한 역할을 한 것으로 보인다. 상징성은 지석묘의 상징성과 부장품의 상징성으로 구분된다. 지석묘의 상징성은 지석묘를 ‘거석(석재)의 채용’과 ‘기념물적 분묘의 등장’이라는 관점에서 형태, 규모, 배치, 입지, 구조 등을 검토하였다. 기본적으로 주재료인 ‘돌(石)’의 견고성과 영원성을 바탕으로 ‘거석사상’과 ‘애니미즘사상’이 지석묘 상징성의 바탕이 된다. 이와 더불어 ‘상석’과‘ 묘역’은 형태, 구조, 규모를 통해 묘표석, 제단, 교통로 표지석, 농경사회의 기념물, 취락의 경계, 가매장시설 등의 다양한 상징성을 표현한다. 부장품의 상징성은 ‘내세관 및 장송의례’의 관점에서 부장품과 의례품의 관계, 부장품 종류에 따른 상징성 등을 검토하였다. 부장품은 내세를 위한 것이며, 의례품은 분묘축조나 피 장자를 떠나보내는 장송의례 과정에서 사용된다. 이들은 성격에 따라 사용되는 시점이나 기능, 용도, 형태 등이 차이가 난다. 부장품은 대부분 완형으로 피장자과 밀접한 관계를 가지며 시신과 함께 매납된다. 의례 품은 분묘축조 과정의 안전과 피장자를 떠나보내는 슬픔, 부정방지와 정화의 의미에서 행해지며 대부분이 편으로 확인된다. 부장품의 종류는 무기류(비파형동검, 동촉, 동모, 석검, 석촉), 용기류(적색마연토기, 가지 문토기), 장신구(옥)가 중심을 이룬다. 전자는 내세에서의 안전과 안녕을 기원하는 것으로 후자는 이를 보조하는 역할로 생각된다. 또한 부장품의 종류나 재료에서 차이가 나는 것은 위계화의 차이를 반영하는 것으로 계층화의 진전이 반영된 것으로 이해된다.

영어 초록

Dolmen is a type of‘megalithic culture’and one of the representative burial systems in the Bronze Age. The biggest characteristic of dolmen is adopting a megalith to build a tomb, and the method and structure of building are completely different from those of the New Stone Age. It means that dolmen is not a mere structure to bury the body but the tomb itself forms a monument equipped with symbolic meaning. Therefore, the function of a tomb is extended from‘simple burial’to‘a symbolic monument’. Moreover, the processes of construction or funeral rites are also extended to a crucial festival of from ‘the family unit’to‘the settlement unit’. This alteration of tomb aspects is genuinely found from the middle of the Bronze Age. In the background, socio-structural changes, for instance, the alteration of living and economy resulted from agricultural development, emergence of a large settlement, formation of a network among settlements, and progress of stratification, did play important roles. Symbolicity is distinguished from dolmen’s symbolicity and burial goods’symbolicity. In the symbolicity of dolmen,‘the idea of a megalith’and‘the idea of animism’grounded on the main component, stone’s solidity and perpetuity form the main part. Through their forms, structures, and scales,‘the capstone’and‘tomb area’express a variety of symbolicities such as myopyoseok, altars, sign stones on traffic routes, agrarian society’s monuments, borders of settlements, and temporary burial facilities. Burial goods’symbolicity is differentiated from burial goods and ritual goods. Burial goods are mostly gradual and closely associated with the buried person and are buried with the body. Ritual goods are found mostly as pieces, and they were used as a meaning of getting rid of sadness, misfortune, or any dirtiness to wish for safety and say good-bye to the buried person in the process of building and managing the tomb. The types of burial goods are mainly weapons, bowls, and accessories, and some of the tools or farming tools are also found. The former is to wish for safety and well-being in next life, and the latter seems to have played auxiliary roles. A lso, t he t ypes o r m aterials o f burial goods show difference as they reflect the difference of classes and progress of stratification.
