고구려 벽화고분은 100년이 넘는 기간 동안 지속적인 발굴 조사와 학술 연구를 통해 현재까지 역사, 고고, 복식, 문화사, 미술사 등의 방면에서 적지 않은 논문들이 발표되었다.
고구려 고분벽화가 처음 발견된 1907년부터 1980년대까지 벽화고분에 대한 조사와 연구는 일제강점기 발굴을 처음 시작한 일본과 벽화고분이 위치한 북한과 중국에 의해 주도됐다. 한국 학계는 정치 이념과 지리적 문제로 인해 원천자료에 대한 접근이 불가능했고, 척박 한 연구 환경으로 인해 고구려 고분벽화 연구가 활성화되지 못했다. 그러나 1980년대 중반에 이르러 일본을 통해 북한과 중국의 벽화관련 출판물들이 다량 유입되면서 연구를 위한 기초자료들이 서서히 갖춰지기 시작했다. 특히 1990년대 초반 중국이 문호를 개방하고 2000 년대 초에 남북 간의 화해무드로 인해 학술교류가 활성화되면서 벽화에 대한 실견과 원천자료에 대한 접근이 한 층 수월해졌으며 미술사 연구를 위한 토대도 전보다 탄탄해져 갔다.
1990년대 이전까지 미술사 분야의 연구는 벽화고분이 갖는 여러 가지 제약으로 인해 학계의 주목을 받기 어려웠으나, 이후 전문 연구자들이 배출되고 미술사의 양식론에 입각한 거시적, 미시적 관점의 다양한 논문들이 생산되었다. 게다가 회화이외에 공예나 불교조각를 전공하는 미술사학자들도 고구려 벽화 연구에 동참하여 전공 연구자가 아니면 다룰 수 없는 세부적인 주제들을 심층적으로 분석하여 고구려 고분벽화를 보다 다양한 관점에서 해석하는데 기여했다.
100여년에 걸친 고구려 고분벽화 연구는 그동안 다양한 주제에서 적지 않은 성과물들을 생산해냈지만 전공인력의 부족과 벽화 원천자료의 불완전한 공개 같은 문제들은 여전히 해결 되지 않은 채 남아있다. 무엇보다도 아직까지 많은 고분의 벽화 자료가 제대로 정리, 발표되지 않아 벽화연구의 발전에 걸림돌로 작용한다. 남북교류를 통한 원천자료의 정리와 출판이 시급하며 벽화를 전공하는 미술사 방면 연구자들이 보다 적극적으로 배출되어 다양한 방면에 걸친 활발한 연구가 필요하다. 또한 양식론에 입각한 연구결과물들이 보다 많이 쌓여 고구려 벽화고분의 편년을 해결하는 데 유용한 기준안을 제공할 수 있어야 할 것이다.

영어 초록

Many books and papers on Koguryo mural paintings have been published for more than 100 years in each academic field, including history, archeology, costumes, cultural history and art history etc through archaeological survey and academic researches.
From 1907, when the tomb murals of the Koguryo tomb were first discovered, to the 1980s, the excavations and researches on tomb mural paintings were led by Japan which began to excavate Japan during the Japanese colonial period, and then North Korea and China, both of which possessed mural paintings. Due to political ideology and geographical problems, the Korean academic community was unable to access the source data and publications on the tomb murals of Koguryeo. Therefore the research of Koguryo mural painting had been not activated due to the harsh research environment like that. However, by the middle of the 1980s, a large amount of mural-related publications from North Korea and China had been introduced through Japan, and basic data for research began to be gradually introduced. In particular, as China opened its doors in the early 1990s, academic exchanges became active, and the reconciliation moods of the two Koreas in the early 2000s made access to sources of murals become easier. As a result the foundation for research in art history became more solid.
Until the 1990s, research on the field of art history was difficult to receive attention from academia due to various constraints of mural tombs. However, after that, a variety of papers with macroscopic and microscopic perspectives based on the style of art history were produced. In addition, art historians majoring in crafts and Buddhist sculptures contributed to the interpretation of the Goguryeo tomb murals in more various ways by analyzing the details.
Over 100 years of research on tomb murals in Koguryo have produced a number of noteworthy achievements, but the problems such as lack of major researchers and incomplete disclosure of mural paintings remain unresolved. It is urgent to organize and publish the source data through inter-Korean exchanges, and researchers in the field of art history who major in murals are actively discharged and active research is needed in various fields. In addition, it should be possible to provide a standard that can be used to solve the chronology of Kokuryo mural tombs by accumulating more researches based on the Iconography.
