소개글
Present an interpretation of In the Absence through the critical lens of trauma and/or testimony. How does the documentary—as an audio-visual medium—navigate trauma’s inherent incomprehensibility and/or relationality? How does the documentary function as testimony and/or position us as “witness”? Your response should include a close analysis of the documentary.

The short documentary In the Absence, directed by Yi Seung-Jun, ends with one of the civilian divers, late Kim Gwan-Hong’s narration that puts the viewers in agony and wonders about the sufferings of related individuals of the Sewol ferry disaster. As such, the director composes the documentary with multiple testimonies and pieces of evidence of the tragedy and employs various film techniques to highlight the emotional trauma of the survivors, parents of the children who were unaccounted for, and civilian divers.
