Introduction
Electrolysis is the decomposition of a compound into its constituent elements using electricity to drive the non-spontaneous reactions. The amount of products formed in electrolysis is determined by the duration, current, and the charge on the ion. (Catrin Brown, 2008) Electrodes are electronically conducting and electrolytes are ionically conducting. (ibid.) Electroplating is the process of using electrolysis to deposit a metal on top of a conductive object. (Lanna Derry, 2008) In this investigation, the effect of changing the current in the electrolysis of aqueous copper sulfate on the density of copper solid electroplated will be explored by measuring the mass and volume of the copper produced on the cathode. The density will be calculated by dividing the mass and volume of copper produced.
