삼화사 철조노사나불상의 조성과 그 의미

이 글은 기존의 연구 성과를 토대로 삼화사 창건 내역과 노사나불상 조성의 내용, 그리고 불상 조성의 불교사적 의미를 살펴본 것이다. 다만 불상의 양식을 중 심으로 고찰한 기존 연구와 달리 명문에 기록된 결언의 행적, 사상 경향을 통해서 삼화사 철조노사나불상 조성의 정치적인 입장을 주로 살폈다. 삼화사는 대체로 후삼국통일 이후에 왕건이 범일의 遺墟에 전각을 세우고 창건하였다고 전한다. 하지만, 조선 후기에 기록된 내용으로 보아, 범일이 터를 닦기 이전에 이미 삼화사는 지금의 자리보다는 바다에 가까운 계곡 아래쪽에 자리 하였다. 삼화사 옛 터에는 석탑 1기와 함께 철불 2구가 있었다고 전한다. 현재는 1구의 철불만이 남아 있는데, 그것은 삼화사 적광전에 봉안된 노사나불상이다. 이 불상은 ‘말법이 시작된 지 300여 년’에 조성되었다. 도피안사 철조비로자나불상이나 염거화상 승탑의 명문과 관련하여 볼 때, 제작 시기는 대체로 860년 쯤일 것이다. 없어진 1구의 철불은 9세기에 전국적으로 비로자나불상 제작이 성행하였음을 고려하면, 비로자나불상일 것으로 짐작된다. 삼화사 철조노사나불상 조성 불사는 결언이 주관하였다. 결언은 삼화사 노사나 불상을 조성하는 불사를 설행한 뒤, 다시 숭복사 노사나불상을 제작하는 불사에 참여하는 등 주로 노사나불상 조성에 깊이 관여하였다. 숭복사 노사나불상의 제작은 경문왕의 지원에 의해서 이루어졌다. 따라서 삼화사 철조노사나불상도 경문왕 의 교서에 의해서 제작되었을 것이다. 곧 삼화사 철조노사나불상의 조성에는 즉위 직후 위상을 부각하면서 정국 주도권을 장악하려는 경문왕의 정치적 의도가 반영 되었다. 결언은 해인사 승려였다. 헌강왕과 정강왕 때 해인사에서는 지엄과 의상을 추모 하는 법회를 개최하면서 60권

영어 초록

This article examines the foundation history of Samhwasa, the construction and the content of Nosanabulsang, as well as the Buddhist meaning of construction of Bulsang (statue of the Buddha) based on previous research findings. Only, as opposed to previous studies focusing on the form of Bulsang, political perspective behind the construction of Samhwasang Cheoljonosanabulsang was mainly observed. Samhwasa is generally known to have been founded as Wanggeon built a royal palace on the historical site of Beomil after the unification of the later three kingdoms. However, the record from the late Chosun reveals that it was already located on the lower part of a valley near the sea instead of the present location even before Beomil laid the foundation. It has been told that there was a stone tower and 2 iron Buddhas on the old site of Samhwasa. Today, only 1 iron Buddha remains and this seems to be Nosanabulsang that was enshrined before the serene light of Samhwasa. This Bulsang was built after 300 years of the start of the latter days of the law. Based on Dopiansa Cheoljobirojanabulsang and Yeomgeohwasang Seungtap of that period, the construction period is presumed to be around the year 860. The iron Buddha that disappeared is presumed to be Birojanabulsang based on the fact that it prevailed around the country in the 9thcentury. The Buddhist service of Samhwasa Cheoljonosanabulsang was supervised by Gyeoleon. Gyeoleon was deeply involved in the construction of Nosanabulsang, for example performing the Buddhist service for constructing Samhwasa Nosanabulsang, as well as attending the Buddhist rituals for building Soongboksa Nosanabulsang. The construction of Seungboksa Nosanabulsnag was supported by King Gyeongmun. Accordingly, Samhwasa Cheoljonosanabulsang too was probably built following the order of king Gyeongmun. The King Gyeongmun’s political intention to accentuate its status following the accession to throne and to seize the political leadership was behind the construction of Samhwasa Cheoljonosanabulsang. Gyeoleon was the Buddhist monk of Haeinsa. During the period of king Heongang and king Jeonggang, Haensa organized Buddhist ceremonies commemorating Jieom and Euisang, and performed Hwaeombulsa for the Avatamska Sutra(Hwaeomgyeong). Gyeoleon, along with Hyeonjun, organized Buddhist services. Natuallry, Gyeoleon had Hwaeomsasang, but was also interested in scholarly reasoning and practical logic. As Gyeoleon emphasized combined Hwaeomsasang as he organized Buddhist services building Nasanabulsang and Birojanabulsang,, the stance of King Gyeongmun wishing to embrace the Buddhism was reflected. The royal family of King Gyeongmun tried to pacify the public sentiment perceiving that the world was coming to an end, and to hold Seonjongsanmun in check. Finally, the construction Buddhist services of Samhwasa Cheoljonosanabulsang was closely related to political intention of the royal family of king Gyeongmun who attempted to preserve its power with the interest in Myeongju areas and by using Samcheok as strategic point.
