스마트 기기의 급격한 증가와 대중화로 인해 인쇄된 텍스트를 디지털화한 전자책(e-book)은기존의 종이책을 대체하고 학습에서의 큰 변화를 가져올 것으로 예측되고 있다. 교육공학 분야에서는 전자책이 종이책을 대체할 수 있도록 하기 위해서 주로 인터페이스 설계 및 사용성관련 접근을 취해 왔다. 그러나 이제 전자책을 보다 지식을 구성하는 맥락의 일부로 다른 요소와 상호작용하면서 학습에 복합적인 영향을 미치는 요소로 접근할 필요가 있다. 이 연구는성인 학습자들이 전자책을 학습에 활용하는 데 영향을 미치는 요소를 학습자의 관점에서 탐색하여 각 요소 간의 개념적인 관계를 구조화 해 보고자 수행되었다. 이 연구를 위해 대학생,대학원생, 직장인 8명을 대상으로 전자책과 종이책을 읽고 요약과제를 수행하도록 한 후, 그과정에서의 차이에 대해 심층 면담하여 자료를 수집하였고, 질적 연구방법론인 근거이론을 사용하여 개방코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩 방식에 따라 자료를 분석하고 개념적 구성 틀을 개발하였다. 연구 결과, 성인 학습자들이 전자책을 활용하는 데 영향을 미치는 요소는 크게 5가지 즉시대적 동기, 실용적 동기(가격, 무게), 기능(페이지 이동, 검색, 폰트, 화면 밝기, 하이라이트,메모, 책갈피), 인지과정(기억, 구조 파악, 과제 종류), 감정(성취감, 익숙함, 이질감), 학습효과(이해도, 학습효율)로 나타났다. 이들 요소 간의 관계는 기능과 감정이 인과적 조건으로 인지과정에 영향을 미치고, 시대적 동기가 맥락적 조건으로, 실용적 동기가 중재적 조건으로 작용하며, 인지과정은 궁극적으로 결과요소인 학습효과에 영향을 주는 것으로 개념화 하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 실용적으로는 전자책 콘텐츠 설계 및 전자책을 학습에 활용하는 교수설계에의 지침을 제안하였고, 이론적으로 기존 매체 이론 및 전자책 관련 연구에 시사하는 바에대해 논의하였다.

영어 초록

As smart devices are rapidly growing and becoming popular, e-books, the digitized version of a printedbook which can be read on a specifically designed device, are being predicted to replace paper-books andto bring a big change in learning. The field of educational technology has been interested in interfacedesign or usability of e-books. However, there exists a need for an approach to e-books as a part of alearning context interacting with various factors and impacting compounding effects on learning. This studyaims at qualitatively exploring factors affecting adult learners' utilizing E-book for learning, and structuringthe conceptual relationships among the factors. For this study, total of eight adults including collegestudents, graduate students, and company workers were asked to read a chapters with a printed book andanother chapter with an e-book in ipad, and to summarize those chapters. The participants wereinterviewed after the tasks on the differences the two modes of readings. The interviews were audio- andvideo reordered, transcribed, and analyzed. The interview data were analyzed according to the groundedtheory method. The data were used for open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, which finallyconstitutes conceptual structure. As a result, the five factors affecting adult learners' use of e-book forlearning were discovered: periodical motive, practical motive (weight, price), functional motive (pagenavigation, search, font, screen brightness, highlight, memo, and bookmark), cognitive process motive(memory, structural comprehension, task type), and affective motive (feeling of accomplishment, familiarity,and sense of difference/foreignness), and learning effects motive (quality of comprehension, reading speed).The relationships among the factors were: functional motive and affective motive as the causal conditionsinfluence on the cognitive process motive, the periodical motive works as a contextual condition, thepractical motive work as a mediating condition, and the cognitive process motive ultimately influences onlearning effects. Based on the results, practical implications on designing and utilizing e-book/digital textsfor learning were discussed, and theoretical implications on media theory and research were also discussed.
